Research for FMP

For my FMP I wanted to design a 3D model of a motorcycle and the rider to do this i had  to research different types of bikes and artist.
I knew I wanted to make a big engined sports bike so i started looking bikes such as.

Suzuki GS500F

Yamaha R1

Kawasaki Ninja

Honda CBR1000

After looking at the bikes closely i decided on the Suzuki gs500f because of the shape, style and the layout of the parts of the bike, it seems like it would be the most fun and less time consuming to model. Also out of all the bikes the Suzuki is the one that stood out for me because of the head light, all the other bikes have two lights, this just looked too generic for me.

Now that i had the bike i needed to find the rider design that went with the style of bike. To do this i was looking into artist such Scott Robertson because he is an artist that draws future concept vehicles and can fit his vehicles with a character very well. I also was looking at an artist called Don Figueroa. He is the man that came up with look for most of the Transformers, so i thought that i could make the bike rider have a different helmet shape just to make the rider a bit different and modern.

Overall I think that the artist and bike companies that i researched were relevant for the style i was looking for and would help me with my FMP.

FMP Evaluation

For my Final Major project I wanted to create something using the 3d modelling skills I learnt these past two years as I feel most strong in this and find modelling interesting. To come up with my idea I decided to use my other interest of bikes. Although 3D modelling is a favourite of mine I would also like to extend my work by including animation. My idea was to create a man on a bike that that transformed the bike as a suit of armour for the man to do this I would of needed 3Ds Max.

To do this I had to research bikes and their parts as well as the human figure. My primary research was my own motorcycle that I own. I also needed to research into artist to find a style in this piece I was creating such as Scott Robertson I really liked his work because of its placement and block like look.

I started my work by doing drawings of my character and bike I did them in a range of styles such as quick sketch and line work I found I had succeeded in my line drawings they were my potential to move forward in this projects and continued this style digitally.

I independently researched the relevant tutorials needed to complete the project because of my lack of skill with the software. Creating the model in 3Ds Max was going to be my biggest challenge I needed to learn how to rig a character, spine modelling, placement and scale. These are all factors that I needed to know and wanted to individually learn without the help of tutors which I did using tutorials and researching the software my self gaining more knowledge as I went along in this project. This is something I feel I have been very successful overall in my FMP.

I chose to model the 3d models in cel shade to texture them I used basic flat colours in the 3Ds Max material editor, this makes the model stand out more in this art form and made it less detailed. I chose to do this because I did not want photo realism.

So far looking at my work, if I had more time to work on my model I would have put in more parts for the bike but because of my tight schedule. Working towards a deadline and Scheduling the time management myself I realised that I did not time well and fell behind on plans. However I looked at this and worked my plan back on track to meet my deadlines.

Through my independent study I decided to use the software AR media as I felt this would be really intriguing in my work and to the viewer as this will interact with the audience. This again is something that I needed to learn and do so on my own.

Through more scheduling issues and biting off more than I can chew I realised that my plans were going to have change because of time. My idea was too complex to fit the deadline. If I had had further time it would have been completed. My remastered idea is now to have my character and bike static but still on AR media so viewers can move then models themselves and take closer looks. I really like this idea as viewers can see the detail I have done on my models.

Overall I think that my FMP was a success even though I had to change my idea for the final out come a few time because of lack out time and skill with the software. But even though the end result was not what I intended to present it still had very positive response at the summer show. I think that this is because it let the viewer interact with the piece and not just watch it like a video. If i had to go back and redo this project again the first thing I would do differently is to maybe not spend as much time on the model because in the augmented reality it can't quite pick up all the detail put in.To get my final piece ready for the show I independently researched the relevant tutorials needed to complete the project because of my lack of skill with the software. I am very happy with the final outcome because of what I managed to achieve within the 16 week time period.

FMP summer show presentation

This is my layout for my FMP, i had two print outs of my model rendered in cel shade and an ARmedia marker mounted on foam board so that the webcam can read the data.

Idea Generation

This was my process for choosing my FMP idea. In the end I decided to make an animated short film about a motorcycle that transforms into a suit of robotic armor on the rider, I will also have a big QR code on the floor connected to a webcam that shows my 3D model. The film will be made in 3DS Max.

Timeline

The bike model will roughly take 30 hours to make. This does not include textures. After this I will then move on to texturing and rigging. then the final step is to animate the scenes.

  • week 1 start 3D modeling the harder parts of the bike and get a start on the machinery e.g chain, sprocket  rims ect.
  • week 2 finish off machinery and start on frame of bike.
  • week 3 continue with bike frame and finish any part that need doing.
  • week 4 finish frame and make fairings for both sides and front of bike
  • week 5 make rider low poly and put biped in as skeleton ready for rigging
  • week 6 rig the model of the man using biped and start texturing bike
  • week 7 continue texturing
  • week 8 start piecing bike parts to biped to form armor
  • week 9 continue with armor
  • week 10 sort out background set e.g street and sky
  • week 11 start choreography for animation
  • week 12 continue with animating scene
  • week 13 continue with animating fight scene
  • week 14 final touches to film and sound editing
  • week 15 get film rendered and ready for summer show

Proposal

My proposal is to make a 3D animated short film around 1minute to 1 minute 30. The short film is going to be an action packed clip (character A vs character B).

The characters are motorcycle riders that have there bikes transform in a suit of armor. I would like the 3D model standard to be quite high so that it looks professional. The models are being made in 3Ds max and the animation will be done in maya.

I have always had a passion for motorcycles since a very young age. This is one of the reasons why i chosen to make a short film about bikes. Also i am a very big sci fi fan and love the fact that i now have this opportunity to make transforming suit of armor. Another reason why i am making a animated short film   is because i am quite a strong 3D modeller.

some of the art that influenced me to make this film is from an artist call Scott Robertson, he is an artist that mainly digitally draws future concept vehicles but some of his work is of robot vehicles that take on the shape of animals or humans.

I would like to do 2 renders of my film one as a standard render and the other one in cel shade. I would like to do this because i have always been a big fan of cel shaded work because of the way it stands out and defines all the detail in an image or object.

Some of the reference images i used for inspiration
  • Chris Nolans tumbler from Batman The Dark Knight
  • Michael Bays Transformers
  • John Favreaus iron man
  • suzuki gs500f
During the Summer Show I would like to make a big QR code that translates in to my 3D model so that the people in the show can stand next to an augmented reality version of my model via a webcam.

Report

my first idea for my FMP was to make a live action film with elements of CG in it. The film would be motorcycle based so the CG would be all hard surfaces witch is a strong skill of mine. One of the benefits of making a live action film is that i already have experience with green screen work. But after careful consideration i realised that i could do it but not in the time scale i was given so i changed my project slightly.  I have now decided to make an animated short film instead because of the time consternates, this will still be a challenge because my initial story has changed and will now have to 3D model for objects and scenery also to have the job of animating characters but all of this is doable by the deadline.

For my experimentation i designed characters that i have been influenced by from artist such as Scott Robertson. I researched into his art of robots and vehicles, and his ability to give them personalities and animal like features.

influence

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agk2svo7svI

The images i have found are all very similar in style and have influenced me with the amount of pieces in the main subject. When i make my main characters armor i would like it to have many pieces that slide and interact with each other. One of my main influences for this work is an artist is Scott Robertson. A lot of his work that i have been researching has been future concepts of bikes and cars. Also his ability to give transport personalities, he does this by giving the vehicles animal features. Another influence for my FMP is transformers, i am influenced by transformers because of they transform and include all the pieces of the vehicle and how the metal is able to slide and move into place. The reason why I have chosen to use the batmobile (tumbler) is because I like to way that all the panels lap over each other to bulk it out and give it intimidating  look.

Subject areas:
Web Design
3D Modelling x
Game Design x
Digital Graphics for Corporate Identity
Digital Graphics for Image Manipulation
Motion Video x
Digital/Interactive Installation x
Animation x
Interface design

3D models are made by using a 3D modelling software, clay or by scanning. 3D models are manly using in the movies and video game industry. But can also be used in other fields of work such as concept artists ect. Some models are made reference images, this allows the artist to get a more precise model. other times the artist just starts out with a cube or a sphere.

game design is the development of games this can range form character design to level design and even script and story boards. Game design has to start from ideas and then develop, from this point the maker can develop concepts. The designer has also got the job to mach up the style of gameplay to the design of the game.

animation is the display of image in a motion that create movement to the viewer. This can be done with 3D models or images and in the present day motion tracking and mapping. Animation can be used for games and movies in softwares like flash and maya. Stop motion animation is the through the use of still images on physical objects to give them movement, this gives the illusion that the object is actually moving.
