Idea Generation

This was my process for choosing my FMP idea. In the end I decided to make an animated short film about a motorcycle that transforms into a suit of robotic armor on the rider, I will also have a big QR code on the floor connected to a webcam that shows my 3D model. The film will be made in 3DS Max.

Timeline

The bike model will roughly take 30 hours to make. This does not include textures. After this I will then move on to texturing and rigging. then the final step is to animate the scenes.

  • week 1 start 3D modeling the harder parts of the bike and get a start on the machinery e.g chain, sprocket  rims ect.
  • week 2 finish off machinery and start on frame of bike.
  • week 3 continue with bike frame and finish any part that need doing.
  • week 4 finish frame and make fairings for both sides and front of bike
  • week 5 make rider low poly and put biped in as skeleton ready for rigging
  • week 6 rig the model of the man using biped and start texturing bike
  • week 7 continue texturing
  • week 8 start piecing bike parts to biped to form armor
  • week 9 continue with armor
  • week 10 sort out background set e.g street and sky
  • week 11 start choreography for animation
  • week 12 continue with animating scene
  • week 13 continue with animating fight scene
  • week 14 final touches to film and sound editing
  • week 15 get film rendered and ready for summer show

Proposal

My proposal is to make a 3D animated short film around 1minute to 1 minute 30. The short film is going to be an action packed clip (character A vs character B).

The characters are motorcycle riders that have there bikes transform in a suit of armor. I would like the 3D model standard to be quite high so that it looks professional. The models are being made in 3Ds max and the animation will be done in maya.

I have always had a passion for motorcycles since a very young age. This is one of the reasons why i chosen to make a short film about bikes. Also i am a very big sci fi fan and love the fact that i now have this opportunity to make transforming suit of armor. Another reason why i am making a animated short film   is because i am quite a strong 3D modeller.

some of the art that influenced me to make this film is from an artist call Scott Robertson, he is an artist that mainly digitally draws future concept vehicles but some of his work is of robot vehicles that take on the shape of animals or humans.

I would like to do 2 renders of my film one as a standard render and the other one in cel shade. I would like to do this because i have always been a big fan of cel shaded work because of the way it stands out and defines all the detail in an image or object.

Some of the reference images i used for inspiration
  • Chris Nolans tumbler from Batman The Dark Knight
  • Michael Bays Transformers
  • John Favreaus iron man
  • suzuki gs500f
During the Summer Show I would like to make a big QR code that translates in to my 3D model so that the people in the show can stand next to an augmented reality version of my model via a webcam.
